Mini Camps
Every year the Dixon Rugby club hosts mini camps where both experienced and inexperienced players can come out to learn the fundamentals of the sport. It was held on the weekend of 11/13-11/14 and there was a great turnout for all the Rugby teams. Every player from last year showed up and even some new players came out to see if maybe they were interested in trying rugby out.
Every age group was represented at the camp. Players were split up according to age and put into those groups so that the drills ran smoothly and no one felt out of place. The camp had many different drills to test and improve the skills that the players may have already possessed. Over the two days, players were faced with many different kinds of drills such as hitting, tackling, rucking, malling, ball handling, scrumming, line outs, offence, and defense.
In addition to the skills work at the mini camps, the teams this year are working really hard on their overall fitness. Downtown they have put together a gym for all players to use. The machinery for the gym was donated by the players and their parents. The players are also required to run the “Ledge.” The “Ledge” is a hill in Vacaville that is 3 miles and contains peaks and valleys to test the player’s stamina.
Head coach, Rob Salaber, is also trying to get a U-12 team started in Dixon. If he even manages to get a team started, it will be difficult to find opponents to play because most programs don’t have teams for players that young. It would be really beneficial to Dixon’s program to be able to train and teach the players fundamentals early so that they can develop a broad base of future players.
