Super Bowl XLVI
Last Sunday, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots played in the forty-sixth edition of the Super Bowl. The game was played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, home of the Colts. Before their encounter on Sunday, the Giants had won the previous two times the teams had faced each other and the Patriots looked to avenge their losses. In 2008 the two teams went against each other in Super Bowl 42 and the Giants handed the Patriots a very tough loss. Unfortunately for the Pats, it did not go their way again this time around, and they lost by a very close score of 21-17. Eli Manning and his Giants would get their second title- both against Tom Brady and the Patriots.
The Patriots won the coin toss and decided to defer so New York would receive the opening kickoff. Eli and his offense got off to a hot start and marched down the field, but they were held in check by the New England defense and were forced to punt. Wetherford pinned Brady and his offense at their own 3 yard line. It did not take long for the Giants’ defensive line to get going. After only one snap of the ball, Justin Tuck got pressure on Tom, and he was forced to throw the ball away. Unfortunately for the Pats, he was called for intentional grounding, and because he was in his own endzone, he received a safety. New York got two points and the ball back, and it did not take them long to march back down the field. Their offense looked red hot, and if the Patriots could not contain them, it was going to be a long night. On their second possession, the Giants went down the field and scored a touchdown. Eli threw a pass to rookie sensation, Victor Cruz, and now they were up by 9. The first quarter was dominated by the Giants: they had their opponents on their heels.
Even though the first quarter was completely dominated by New York, New England made a run of their own. They started the second quarter with the ball and ran their hurry up offense. They were able to keep the Giants defense on their heels, but in the red zone New York held up. Gostkowski kicked a field goal to finally put them on the board. Like the first quarter, there was not much scoring and the only scoring done in the second quarter was done by the Patriots. New York was able to produce offense but they were just not able to go down the field.
Possesion of the ball went back and forth and with four and a half minutes left in the half, the Patriots got the ball. Tom Brady led his team down the field along with help from Wes Welker and Deion Branch. They ran down the clock and were able to capitalize, and Brady threw a touchdown to his tight end Aaron Hernandez. The Patriots had their first lead of the game and would receive the ball for the second half kick off.
There was not much to see for the half time show. Madonna along with LMFAO, Ceelo Green, M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj performed. Madonna is past her prime and should just stick to making music and nothing else.
New England got the ball to start the second half. Just as the second quarter ended, the third quarter began. Brady and his red hot offense marched down the field once again, but this time it was Benjarvis Green-Ellis who ran the ball into the endzone. The Patriots now scored 17 unanswered points and momentum looked to sway their way. However, New York was not phased one bit. Eli Manning has faced adversity many a time. Manning and the Giants’ running game led them down the field, and they were able to put three more points on the board. Little by little, New York chiseled away at the Patriots lead. New England’s offense was held in check by New York’s defense and for the first time since the first quarter, momentum was finally swaying their way once again. The Giants were able to score another field goal, and the score was now 17-15, still in favor of New England. New York’s defense was holding their own and their offense was putting up some some points. The score would remain the same the rest of the quarter, and New England would have the ball to start the final quarter of play.
The Patriots did not capitalize on their opportunity to take advantage of the game and take the lead. The Giants defense kept hanging in there and did not allow for New England to score. However, Eli and his offense were moving the ball down the field but when it came time to score, they did not capitalize either. On their second to last possession of the game the Patriots made a critical error, and Tom Brady threw an interception. Linebacker Blackburn from the Giants was responsible for the takeaway and gave the Giants new life. Still down by two, New York had an opportunity to take the lead and took advantage. Once again, Eli Manning led his team down the field for what would be another game winning drive. The most incredible play of the game was Mario Manningham’s fingertip grab that kept the drive alive and put the Giants in control of the game. The Pats then allowed Ahmad Bradshaw to rush into the endzone so they could give Tom Brady more time on the clock. Fortunately for the Giants, Coach Belichick’s plan backfired and, along with a couple dropped passes, Brady was sacked once again and hopes were very slim. He converted on fourth down but still had a long way to go and very little time left. On the last play of the game Tom threw a hail mary in hopes to win the game but failed. Eli Manning and the New York Giants won another Super Bowl against the Patriots. The final score was 21-17.
The New England Patriots once again fell short against the Giants in the Super Bowl. Eli manning won his second title and now has more rings than his brother. The future looks bright for the Giants and maybe next year the Pats will be able to comeback and win.
