Rams swim teams win GEL Championship for second year in a row
With temperatures reaching the 90′s on Saturday, April 21st, the Rams and Lady Rams swim teams blazed to first place finishes to win the Golden Empire League conference championship for swimming. This is the second year in a row that the swim teams have won the GEL championship and despite some stiff competition from teams like Bradshaw Christian, Rio Vista and Marysville both teams combined secured first place by over 700 points. Most races had prelims in the morning and finals in the afternoon. The following is a recap of the finals.
The first event of the day was the 200 yard medley relay. The Lady Rams team of Carlene Dyer (backstroke), Jaida Aikens (breaststroke), Jordan Chance (butterfly), and Alexis Tyhurst (freestyle) took first place in a time of 2:04.55. Coming in third place was Ilana Ferguson (backstroke), Bridget Roberts (breaststroke), Alyssa Smith (butterfly) and Heather Larson (freestyle) in a time of 2:16.82 missing out on second place by only .39 seconds.
The Rams 200 yard medley relay team of Austin Anderson (backstroke), Bryan Poole (breaststroke), Channing Madden (butterfly) and Alex LaBass (freestyle) took first place in a time of 1:51.54. Less than 3 seconds behind for a second place finish was Jacob Smith (backstroke), James Mayoral (breaststroke), Armando Moyyad (butterfly) and Nate Anderson (freestyle) in the time of 1:54.30.
The first individual race was the 200 yard freestyle. The Lady Rams Gina Garcia swam to a second place finish with a 2:11.57. Rachel Stalie finished third with a 2:12.26. Senior Melissa Ceron went a 2:40.85. In the B- final Branda Macchietto finished with a 2:42.06.
The Rams had four swimmers final top six in the 200 yard freestyle. B. Poole won the event with a 2:00.99. N. Anderson came in third with a 2:06.34. Freshman Patrick Ganaway swam to a fourth place finish in the time of 2:16.71 and first year swimmer Larry Groves placed sixth besting his morning prelim time by 2.5 seconds with a 2:24.45.
Next up was the 200 yard individual medley (IM) races. This race consists of racing 50 yards of all four strokes- butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. J. Aikens won this event in a race time of 2:17.73. She took over 4 seconds off her morning prelim time to win the race by almost 10 seconds. H. Larson placed third with a time of 2:45.97. Sarah Thomason placed fourth with a 2:57.62. Katie Ganaway went a 3:15.94.
The Rams saw A. Anderson go a best time and finish in first place in the time of 2:13.74 in the 200 yard IM. Austin Montz finished in fourth place with a 2:37.67. Brian Bastien finished in fifth place with a 2:38.32 and junior Franklin Quitugua finished sixth with 2:39.61.
The 50 yard freestyle followed the 200 IM. The Lady Rams A. Tyhurst came in second in a time of 27.05. A. Smith placed third with a 29.98. Freshman Ene Rosas finaled fourth with a 30.90 and Stephanie Sykes finished eleventh with a 34.64.
Coming in second place for The Rams in the 50 yard freestyle was A. LaBass with a time of 24.17. J. Smith finished a solid third only .04 seconds behind with a 24.21. James Mayoral placed seventh in a 26.78. Freshman David Carrazco finished in 14th place with a 30.12.
The next event to be contested was the 100 yard butterfly races. G. Garcia finished in second place with a time of 1:06.27. Third place went to J. Chance with a 1:09.15. Fourth place, in a time of 1:13.15, was C. Dyer. And finaling in eighth place with a second best time for her was Sierra Graham who went a 1:35.54.
The Rams swam in the 100 yard butterfly. Newcomer A. Moyyad took second with a personal best time of 1:00.69. Senior C. Madden went a 1:03.08. Zachary Shulman took fifth with a 1:09.51 and junior A. Gonzalez went a 1:12.24 for a sixth place finish.
The Lady Rams went 1-2 in the 100 yard freestyle race. R. Stalie finished first with a 59.58 besting her prelim time by .19 seconds. A. Tyhurst picked up the second place finish with a 59.90 taking 2.14 seconds off her morning prelim time. First year swimmer Monica Gudino went a 1:22. 38 and Senior Natalie Vergara went a 1:23.52 in prelims.
The Rams saw C. Madden win the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 52.44. Zachary Shulman finaled third with a 54.37. Junior Will
Staiger broke the 1 minute mark for the first time in his swim career with a 59.41 and freshman Dillon Page went a 1.01.01 besting his morning prelim time by .05 seconds.
The longest race of the day was the 500 yard freestyle. The Lady Rams finished second, third, fifth and sixth. Senior J. Chance placed second in a time of 6:14.14. A. Smith went a 6:34.64. B. Macchietto placed fifth with a 7:15.03 and only .94 seconds behind her for a sixth place finish was Katie Mathis in a race time of 7:15.97.
The Rams took first, second, third and fifth in the 500 yard freestyle. A. Anderson went a best time of 5:30.72. A. Gonzalez also swam a best time of 5:32.72. Three seconds behind Gonzalez was N. Anderson with a 5:35.81 and finishing in fifth place was Evan Wiley with a 6:09.56.
In a break from the individual races the athletes took on the 200 yard freestyle relays. Lady Rams G. Garcia, A. Tyhurst, R. Stalie and J. Aikens won the event in a race time of 1:50.95. Coming in third place was H. Larson, E. Rosas, I Ferguson and A. Smith with a time of 2:05.48.
The Rams took first and third in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The relay team of A. Gonzalez, N. Anderson, Z. Shulman and A. LaBass won the event in a time of 1:39.40. Third place went to F. Quitigua, Austin Dyer, J. Mayoral and A. Moyyad in a time of 1:49.33
The next individual event, the 100 yard backstroke, saw three Lady Rams swimmers sweep the top three. C. Dyer placed first in a race time of 1:11.61. I. Ferguson placed second with a 1:15.76 taking 1.16 seconds off from her morning prelim time. H. Larson finished in third place only .15. seconds behind Ferguson.
The Rams saw freshman J. Smith take second place in the 100 backstoke with a time of 1:03.83. Jackson Dwelley came in third with a 1:08.42. W. Staiger placed fifth with a 1:13.08 and F. Quitigua came in sixth with a 1:15.71.
The last individual race of the day was the 100 yard breaststroke race. Junior J. Aikens won the event in a race time of 1:11.98. Finishing second was B. Roberts with a 1:25.79. Senior Miranda Ebert, in her last race for the DHS swim team went a best time of 1:31.83. Sophomore Karli Pryor prelimed with a 1:44.65.
The Rams also took first in the 100 yard breaststroke race. Bryan Poole won the event with a time of 1:06.53 which was a second best time for him in this race. A. LaBass took fourth with a 1:10.88. J. Mayoral came in fifth with a 1:15.60 and sophomore A. Dyer placed eighth with a 1:23.10.
The final races of the day was the 400 yard freestyle relays. The Lady Rams took first and fourth place in this event. The team of R. Stalie, C. Dyer, J. Chance and G. Garcia went a 4:07.52. Fourth place went to the team of B. Roberts, K. Mathis, M. Ceron and E. Rosas in a time of 4:54.33.
The Rams also finaled first and fourth in the 400 yard freestyle relay. A. Gonzalez, J. Smith, A. Anderson and C. Madden went a 3:41.36. B. Poole, J. Dwelley, W. Staiger and Z. Shulman went a 3:50.08 for fourth place.
According to the coaches, Gabe Villasenor and assistant coach Adrienne Anderson, 98% of the swimmers went best times at this championship meet. Congratulations to the Dixon High School Rams/Lady Rams swim teams.
